I whistled before I could stop myself. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be,” Sophia said. “It sounds more impressive than it was. Medusa was my friend. After what Athena did to her, I wanted to help. I wasn’t in the temple the day she was raped. Poseidon had seen to it that none of us were. Only her sisters, Stheno and Euryale, heard Medusa’s screams. Poseidon was gone by the time they got there.” Sophia’s voice was clipped with an anger that the millennia had not dulled. “Then Athena arrived. Medusa’s sisters told her what Poseidon had done. They had no reason to lie, and Athena knew they weren’t lying. Poseidon and Athena were rivals, and what better way to humiliate your rival than to rape one of her virgin priestesses in her own temple. But rather than protect her priestess, Athena blamed the rape on Medusa and turned her into a gorgon. And when Stheno and Euryale tried to defend their sister, Athena did the same to them. Yes, Poseidon was a god second in power only to Zeus, but Athena was the goddess of war. She wasn’t a coward. Fear was beneath her—as apparently were her priestesses. We were just adornments for her temple, dolls to do her bidding, and no more. Medusa was the one who was raped, but Athena considered it an insult done to her. A humiliation, an embarrassment—to her. So, she got rid of Medusa, the embarrassment. That day, Medusa had no one to help her. Neither did her sisters. I swore my friend would never be without help again. The other priestesses joined me. We left Athena’s temple, and never returned.”

The only sound was the clock ticking on the mantle.

“Soon after, Medusa realized she was pregnant. She was ashamed, and one night while we slept, she went deeper into the caves where we had taken refuge. We searched but couldn’t find her. Medusa had fled so deep she had gone into the realm of Hades. Athena could not pass into Hades’s realm, so she sent Perseus. You all know the part of the story that followed. I founded the Sisters of Medusa to protect Medusa’s sisters after her murder. To do for them what we were unable to do for her.”

“Do you know their leader, Zyta Kokkinos?” I asked.

“I do not. I haven’t had any contact with the Sisterhood in nearly three centuries. Admittedly that is a short length of time for me. Still, I don’t recognize the name, so it must have been a recent change. Mortals easily lose contact with and drift away from each other over a few years. It’s even easier with millennia. I’ve been in northern Canada most of that time. Every few centuries, I sleep. Though it’s getting more difficult to find a place that won’t be disturbed until I awaken.”

Her beautiful eyes looked far away. “Stheno and Euryale were awake for their first few centuries, then like all of us, wearied of the monotony. They slept. Hibernated. The Sisters cared for them in their oblivion.
